Types of Herpes

There are a couple types of herpes, mainly herpes simplex 1, also known as cold sores or mouth herpes, and herpes simplex 2, also refferred to as genital herpes. There is also herpes zoster, a virus that causes herpes shingles but is not related to the herpes simplex virus.

Herpes can be found in places besides the genitals and the mouth. Herpes is a virus that loves mucousal areas and can be found in a number of places including:

  • The mouth
  • The eyes (ocular herpes)
  • The genitals
  • The brain (herpes encephalitis)
  • The skin
  • The face
  • The anus
  • The tongue

    The majority of herpes cases are non-life threatening except in the case of herpes encephalitis where the herpes virus can get into the brain tissue. This is a very serious condition and should be treated immediately by a doctor.

    The types of herpes listed above have no cure. There are many treatments for herpes, but at the moment there are no cures for the virus. This is something that science continues to work on and many great antiviral medications have come out to help reduce outbreaks. Antiviral medications are a great way to manage vaginal herpes as well as cold sores. Also, a number of over the counter medications are avilable to help relieve outbreak symptoms. There are even a number of home remedies that you can try to see what works best for you.

    Having herpes really stinks. I know because I have lived with the virus since I was a baby. No matter what infection of the herpes virus you have, you should take care to not infect others by abstaining from sexual activity, not sharing drinks, food, silverware, napkins, towels, chapstick, toothbrushes, etc. during an outbreak. I personally never share my toothbrush or chapstick with anyone even if I have not had an outbreak.
