How Your Self Image Affects Your Self Esteem

Self image is one's concept of oneself or one's role. If our conception is negative, it affects our self esteem.

It's a domino effect of our overall self. A lot of our characteristics are built from childhood. We tend to carry those with us into adulthood.

Concepts of Self Image Include:

Mirrored Image
  • Our value and self worth as a person.
  • Our roles in life at school, home, and work.
  • Our accomplishments.
  • How others see us.
  • Our purpose in life and our independence.
  • Our dreams and goals for the future.
  • Our strengths.
  • Our weaknesses.
  • Our complete physical appearance.

We judge ourselves on these concepts. We also believe everyone we know judges us based on these same concepts.

Self esteem is pride in oneself, our self respect. If the opinion we form of our self is negative, we lose pride in our self.

Building Your Self Image

Make an assessment of yourself.

Assess the areas you're negative in. Talk to yourself, we all do! Write them down so you can deal with them as they come up. Start using positive thinking and make positive comments to yourself in those areas.

Distinguish Accomplishments

No matter how small or large an accomplishment may seem to you, write it down. These are things that you have done. These show your self worth. Recognize and accept them.

Be Understanding

If you make a mistake, move on. If someone else makes a mistake, be understanding. Realize that no one is perfect, and being understanding has an impact on every one.

Be Confident

Learn to be confident, respect others, and respect yourself.
