Effectively Managing Stress

When we talk about effectively managing stress it is essential that we know what stress is and how it affect us.

There is in physics what is known as Newton's First Law, which stipulates that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The same is true for our bodies when we have to perform some task or meet some target.

Our body reacts in certain ways; our heartbeat rises and so does our blood pressure; our breathing rate increases; our reflexes become more active; the adrenaline level in our blood rises so as to bring about all these changes.

The body undergoes these changes in order to utilize more energy stored in the body or blood and to supply more oxygen to metabolize the stored sources of energy. The reflexes are sharpened by the body to respond quickly to changing external environment and to control the faster movements of our body.

All this is the essential part of stress which gives us the added capacity to meet the external challenges.

Whether they are brought on by us as part of our existence such as, a hunter running after his prey or carrying the prey home after hunting or plowing the field while preparing for sowing.

However, there is an additional part of the stress that is psychological and social in nature.

Psychological and social stress is something that is relatively new. While the human body is relatively more adapt in dealing with physical stress it is less adapt in dealing with psychological and social stress.

Our body reacts to these stresses in same way as it reacts to physical stress. This stress is often unnecessary and it affects our performance and health on a long-term basis.

Worse is that these stresses are not even recognizable when they are first felt and it takes quite some time for a person to become aware of these stresses when one faces them.

The common examples of such stresses are anxiety about reaction of others in society, worry or anxiety about missing deadlines, worry about results such as promotions and pay raise, worry about children's future and other similar worries.

There is very little what one can do to control the sources of the psychological, social or environmental stresses and generally the more you try to control them the more stressed you are going to be.

When we talk about controlling, being able to effectively manage stress or avoiding stress it generally refers to stresses other than physical stresses namely environmental, social and psychological stresses.

First thing in dealing with stress is to recognize and be aware of the signs and symptoms that are produced. Everyone responds in their own way to increasing stress.

Some people become progressively more frantic and impetuous others drag their feet and avoid making decisions. In both cases, stress makes them less efficient. The important thing is to know how you react.

The better you know your own signs, the easier it will be for you in dealing with stress.

Learn about yourself by focusing on situations and times when you know you were stressed in the past. You can then learn to recognize your signs early, in order, in future, to take action before the stresses get out of hand.

One very affective tool you can use for managing stress is a journal. It gives you understanding of the causes of short-term tension in your life.

Make an entry in your journal after each situation you go through. Record the date and time; source of the stress; where it happened; what it related to; how you reacted; how you felt; and how did your reaction help resolve the problem.

As you evaluate the incidents, see what you can change. Are there many sources for your anxiety? Do most of the incidents happen at the same place? Recognize your strengths and your weaknesses in each situation.

Prioritize and write down the sources. List the most frequent and serious sources first. Finalize it by adding the less frequent and less serious sources of stress.

Some of the following may be the symptoms of stress:

  • Irritability and short temper
  • Anxiety, worry or panic

When it comes to being able to effectively manage stress it is imperative that we recognize a few simple facts that are given below:

    - There is a limit to the output you can give or the effort that you can make in a given time.

    - There is no point assuming that you are superman, capable of doing everything on your own. It may be difficult to correctly measure your work capacity but even an approximation is better than no estimate at all.

It is better to fix the targets according to your ability to deliver. Stiffer targets will stress you unnecessarily and will even reduce your work output. Remember, unrealistic targets are like mirages which can never be achieved. They can only bring anxiety, failure and frustration.

    - Remember, that a team can always deliver more than one individual. Your first priority should be to distribute the work amongst your team members and to guide them to complete the assigned tasks. If you cannot delegate then you will be the only working hand on your team and you will give only one man’s work output.

In your team efficiency should be rewarded and inefficiency pointed out and corrected. Keep in mind that inefficiency cannot be tolerated on a long - term basis.

    - Avoid doing too many things at one time, for example, you cannot talk to a visitor, answer a telephone call and dictate a letter to your assistant without making a hash of things.

    - Familial obligations are important as well and therefore, should not be ignored but at the same time should not be allowed to consume all your time. Having a list of priorities in your mind is important to delegate time to various tasks accordingly.

The thing to keep in mind is that stress is a part of your daily life and so, it cannot be avoided but you can learn effectively managing stress; you just need to know how to do so.

Inspired by nature, Native American tradition and the sounds of the Far East, composer Peter Davison weaves a musical tapestry using soothing orchestrations, chant-like vocalizations and Tibetan bells and gongs.

The haunting resonance of the English horn and Indonesian flute create the perfect space to gain introspection and develop connection to the earth, the universe and oneself.
