Lip herpes, also known as cold sores or oral herpes, are caused by the herpes virus. Oral herpes is more likely caused by Herpes Simplex I, but in some cases, Herpes Simplex II (also known as genital herpes) can be the cause.
Herpes is transmitted through contact with an infected person via sexual activity, kissing, sharing a drink or food with an infected person, etc. To contract the virus, you must come in contact with the virus, and then it has to take root in your nervous system.
Your first infection will not neccessarily result in a herpes breakout, which is noted by small blisters forming on or around your lips. The first infection can feel more like the flu. You can have chills, a fever, sore muscles, and other flu like symptoms.
The Good News About Bad News: Herpes Everything You Need to Know
After the initial infection, the virus becomes dormant and stays within your nervous system. Some infected persons will never have an outbreak. They are the lucky ones and are called carriers of the virus. Others will have reoccuring outbreaks of the virus. This is when the blisters will form and appear. I know personally I can feel when a cold sore is coming on due to tingling in my lips as well as a warm spot on my lips. This is also why cold sores are sometimes called fever blisters.
There is no cure from herpes but there are many over the counter medications that can help you manage the symptoms of the virus. The blisters can often be itchy and can become painful when they break and scab. You can talk with your doctor to see if antiviral medications might be right for you.
Outbreaks are often instigated by overexposure to the sun, increased stress, sickness, bad diet, and lack of sleep. being aware of when you are getting run down can help you prevent an outbreak if you take the time to relax and get some rest.
