Causes and Treatments of Eye Allergies

Having eye allergies that make your eyes water and itch all the time are definitely not fun!

When most people think of allergy symptoms they think of runny, itchy noses.

However, allergies do not just have an effect on our nasal and sinus cavities, they also seem to affect the eyes in a lot of cases.

Itchy, watery eyes can lead to red and swollen eyes.

I have good news for you!

Eye allergies can be relieved just as easily as nasal allergies by using prescription or over the counter sinus medications.

Before we go into further detail about how to treat eye allergies, we should go over why these problems occur to begin with.

Causes of Eye Allergies

When it comes to eye allergies it is not surprising when you think about how many people actually have this problem.

If you think about it logically, our eyes are constantly exposed to the environment as long as they are open and unprotected.

Nasal cavities at least have some protection from the allergens that are around all the time.

The protection for the nasal cavities is none other than the pesky little hairs that we try so hard to hide from the view of others.

These hairs filter out most of the particles that float around in the air and cause allergy symptoms.

Because our eyes have no protection like our nasal cavities they are more vulnerable to allergens making them water and itch.

It is thought that out of everyone who has allergies of any type, half of those people will have some sort of eye allergy.

Therefore if you suffer from seasonal allergies, you are more likely to have eye allergies than someone who doesn't.

Having atomic dermatitis or a family history of allergies will also increase your chances of having allergies of the eyes.

Treatments for Eye Allergies

In most cases the best way to prevent allergies is by taking preventive measures.

Stay away from known allergens and do not rub or touch your eyes. Wash you hands frequently in case they have been in contact with any thing that could trigger an allergic reaction.

However, preventive measures do not always work but there are medications available to help you relieve your itchy, watery eyes.

You can buy many over the counter medications for allergies. Your allergy may be more severe so you should talk to your doctor, he may be able to prescribe medication for you.

Usually eye drops are used to relieve allergies in the eyes.

Allergies can be a real pain to deal with, however there are plenty of ways to prevent and sometimes eliminate irritating eye allergy symptoms.
