Itchy Dry Skin..is There Relief?Dry Skin, also known as xerosis, is a very common problem and affects many people. By applying a daily skin care regimen you will notice an improvment in as little as two weeks. The main symptoms are itching and flaky skin, sometimes the skin may be more wrinkled than normal. If you spend a lot of time inside during the winter months, it tends to worsen because the heated air is dry. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is an oily matter that helps protect the skin from the evaporation of water. If the glands don't produce enough sebum, the skin loses water causing dryness. Another theory is the skin cells have become damaged, generating water loss. The priority is to protect and improve the damaged skin. Tips For Dry Skin
Prevention is important, by following these tips, you can reduce or prevent dry skin. - During the indoor heating season, use a humidifier to raise the humidity level. Low humidity can cause dry skin. - Use a sunscreen with a moisturizer. Light damages the skin. If you can, wear protective clothing when you're outside. - Avoid harsh soaps, bath oil, harsh cleaners, and don't overuse antiperspirants or perfumes. - Use a gentle cleanser, one with a high fat content or glycerin that will moisturize your dry skin. - Use tepid water when you shower. Limit your time in the shower or bath. Long baths and showers are nice, but you'll remove more natural oils from your skin. - Moisturize...Moisturize.. and Moisturize.
